What to do in your garden this February

We may be enjoying summer, but canny gardeners always think a few months in advance, so they can enjoy the very best from their outdoor spaces. It’s as well to start thinking about winter and how to prepare your garden for colder weather. At the same time, it’s impossible to ignore the heat, so keep up with your mulching and watering routines. Use water wisely by making use of grey water and rainwater. Gardening in the summer heat can be thirsty work, so keep hydrated – perhaps with a glass of wine in your beautiful garden as the day ends!

DON'T BLEACH YOUR ROOTS Letting your lawn grow long and then cutting it too short can expose grass roots to the sun. Rather mow more frequently.

THE PLOT THICKENS Winter may still seem far off, but by planting cold weather veggies now you can be sure of a bumper crop to enjoy in your winter recipes.

MIND YOUR PEASTo enjoy a wonderful display of sweet pea blooms, fill a trench with manure, compost and bonemeal and soak the seeds overnight.
