What to do in your garden this March

The calendar says autumn, but the thermometer says summer. We’re in between seasons now in South Africa, but that doesn’t mean we’re in between gardening jobs – there is plenty to keep you busy during March. Don’t miss a chance to feed and compost your flowering plants – they’ll thank you by blooming again next year. Some, such as agapanthus and wild iris, need to be cut back, lifted and separated before being replanted if you want a repeat floral display. Plant your winter- and spring-flowering bulbs now, and leaf through your seed catalogue for lettuce and spinach varieties to plant in your veggie patch.

GET A SECOND JOB Enjoying your garden 24/7 will involve a bit of moonlighting to create a garden that looks good at night in silvery lunar light.

LIGHTBULB MOMENT Choose your favourite winter-flowering bulbs and plant them out now, with plenty of compost to give them a head start.

WADE, DON'T SKATEIf you have a water feature in your garden, now’s the time for cleaning and maintenance. It’ll be much less fun in winter!
